There is kindness in a fire.

A Poem.

The remnants of the living. A photo by Darren Fielding

It all caves in on you
once it seems like the tremor has cleared
The safety you once knew
is now a sarcophagus to hold your tears

Your parents have their life savings stolen
just as your wife discovers a lump in her breast
Your medical insurance premium increases
even though what they will cover becomes less

The home we’ve thought to build for ourselves
are not made out of bricks
The contractors said even a gale won’t bring it down
yet it disintegrated in a breath

The world is run by the weak
preying on those with nothing
While those with strength tire
praying for their crumbs to be restored

There is no strength in stealing what is not yours
There is no valour in destroying the homes we build
Those that reap of their lavishness, will reap the tears they’ve sown
For strength comes in holding on, and holding on again
